New Age Spirituality: A Biblical Response
New Age spirituality is one of the fastest-growing belief systems in the West, blending Eastern mysticism, pop psychology, and selective Christian language into a worldview that denies sin, rejects the exclusivity of Christ, and teaches that you are your own savior. Terms like 'manifestation,' 'higher self,' 'vibrations,' and 'the universe' have become mainstream โ even in Christian circles. But beneath the feel-good language lies a theology incompatible with Scripture. This post exposes the core lies of New Age thought and equips believers to respond with biblical clarity.
Key Verse
โFor there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.โ โ 1 Timothy 2:5
"All Paths Lead to God" โ Spiritual Universalism
THE CLAIM: All religions are different roads up the same mountain. Truth is relative and personal. "Your truth" is as valid as anyone else's. God (or the Universe) accepts sincere seekers from every tradition. Judgment and exclusive claims are arrogant and divisive.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6). "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12). "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." (Matthew 7:13-14)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Exclusive religious claims have caused more war, hatred, and violence than anything else in history. A truly loving God would not condemn sincere seekers from other traditions. Truth must be universal โ it cannot belong exclusively to one religion."
THE RESPONSE: The question is not whether exclusive truth claims FEEL comfortable โ it is whether they are TRUE. If a person is lost in a forest and there is only one path out, the most loving thing is not to say "all paths are equally valid" โ it is to say "THIS is the path." Jesus's exclusive claim is not arrogance โ it is rescue. Furthermore, the "all paths lead up the same mountain" analogy fails completely when you examine what different religions actually teach: Islam says Jesus is not God's Son and did not die. Buddhism says there is no personal God at all. Hinduism says God has no special relationship with humanity. Christianity says God became man and died for your sins. These are not different descriptions of the same reality โ they are mutually contradictory claims. They cannot all be true simultaneously. And the logical conclusion of "all truth is relative" is self-refuting: is it absolutely true that all truth is relative? If yes, that is an absolute truth claim โ which contradicts the premise.
THE CALL: You were made for real truth โ not comfortable uncertainty. The hunger you feel for something genuine, something that holds โ that hunger was placed in you by a God who wants to be found. "Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:13)
"The Universe" as a Replacement for God โ Impersonal Force Theology
THE CLAIM: There is an impersonal universal energy, consciousness, or source that permeates all things. This "Universe" responds to your vibration, intention, and alignment. You can co-create with this energy through meditation, positive intention, and spiritual practice. Referring to "God" is unnecessary and dogmatic โ "the Universe" is more inclusive.
THE SCRIPTURE: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1). "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen." (Romans 1:25). "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." (Psalm 19:1). "For in him we live, and move, and have our being." (Acts 17:28)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Calling it 'the Universe' is just using different language for the same reality. Scientists confirm the universe is made of energy. Why does God have to be a person? An impersonal ground of being is more intellectually defensible than an anthropomorphic deity."
THE RESPONSE: The universe is a CREATED thing โ it had a beginning (the Big Bang is scientific confirmation that the universe came into existence from nothing at a specific point in time). A created thing cannot be its own creator. The universe responding to your thoughts and intentions requires the universe to be conscious and aware โ which is what a PERSON is. An impersonal force cannot love, cannot grieve, cannot choose, cannot respond to prayer. The moment you start asking the Universe to "send" you things, to "align" things for you, to "protect" you โ you are treating it as a personal being. Why remove the word "God" only to describe a being with all of God's personal attributes? Romans 1:25 describes this exactly: exchanging the truth of a personal Creator for worship of creation itself. God is not the universe โ He made the universe. He is not a force to be harnessed โ He is a Father to be known.
THE CALL: You already sense there is something personal at the center of existence. The intuition is right. His name is YHWH. "Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?" (Job 11:7). He has made Himself findable โ in the face of Yeshua.
Crystals, Chakras, and Energy Healing
THE CLAIM: Certain crystals vibrate at specific frequencies that interact with the body's energy centers (chakras). Placing crystals near the body or using them in meditation promotes healing, balance, and spiritual attunement. This is ancient wisdom โ not religion โ and is now being confirmed by quantum physics.
THE SCRIPTURE: "There shall not be found among you any one... that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD thy God." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." (Isaiah 8:20). "And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?" (Isaiah 8:19)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Crystals are natural minerals with measurable physical properties. Chakras are an ancient system confirmed by thousands of years of practice across cultures. Quantum physics shows everything is energy โ there's nothing supernatural about this."
THE RESPONSE: Quantum physics does not support crystal healing โ this is a misappropriation of quantum terminology. Quantum effects operate at subatomic scales and have no mechanism to interact with the body through holding a piece of rose quartz. The "energy" of crystals in New Age practice is not electromagnetic or quantum โ it is attributed to metaphysical properties that require spiritual entities to explain. The real question is: where does this power come from? God warns against practices that attribute spiritual power to objects, times, and rituals (Deut 18:10-12) โ not because the objects are neutral, but because the power being accessed is real and is not from Him. Isaiah 8:19-20 asks the piercing question: "should not a people seek unto their God?" When you need guidance, healing, or peace โ go to the Living God who made you, not to a mineral that was formed by geological pressure.
THE CALL: You were designed for connection with a real, living God โ not an energy system. "Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?" (Jeremiah 8:22). There is a Healer. His name is Yeshua.
Astrology and Horoscopes โ The Stars Don't Govern You
THE CLAIM: The position of the planets and stars at your birth shapes your personality, relationships, and destiny. Astrology is an ancient system of self-knowledge. Reading your birth chart helps you understand yourself, navigate relationships, and align with cosmic timing. Many people find it remarkably accurate.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame." (Isaiah 47:13-14). "Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain." (Jeremiah 10:2-3). "Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers... save thee." (Isaiah 47:13)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Astrology is not about prediction โ it's a language of archetypes and self-reflection. It's a psychological tool, not a literal belief that planets control our lives. And it's been practiced for thousands of years across nearly every culture."
THE RESPONSE: If astrology is "just a psychological tool with no real power," why do millions consult it for major life decisions โ relationships, finances, timing of events? The sincerity of the belief reveals the actual dependence. The fact that it has been practiced across many cultures is evidence of the universality of the human tendency toward divination โ not evidence of its truth. God warned Israel not to learn "the way of the heathen" even in things they were doing (Jer 10:2). The stars were made to "declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1) โ they point TO the Creator, they do not govern the created. Your personality was shaped by God who knit you together in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16) โ not by Jupiter's position. Your future is held by the God who knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10) โ not by a birth chart.
THE CALL: God says: "I am the LORD your God... Thou shalt have no other gods before me." The stars were given to mark seasons (Gen 1:14) โ not to govern souls. The One who made the stars knows your name. "He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names." (Psalm 147:4). He calls your name too.
Manifestation and the Law of Attraction โ You Are Not the Creator
THE CLAIM: "The Secret" (Rhonda Byrne) and countless New Age teachers claim: you create your reality through thought, intention, and vibrational alignment. Visualize what you want, feel it as already real, speak it into existence, and the Universe will deliver it. Negative thinking attracts negative outcomes; positive thinking attracts abundance.
THE SCRIPTURE: "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." (Jeremiah 10:23). "A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps." (Proverbs 16:9). "Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow... For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that." (James 4:13-15). "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (1 Peter 5:7)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Quantum physics shows that consciousness affects reality at the subatomic level. Positive thinking improves outcomes โ this is confirmed by psychology. And Jesus said 'ask and you shall receive' โ isn't that manifestation?"
THE RESPONSE: Quantum consciousness claims are pseudoscience โ the observer effect in quantum mechanics refers to measuring instruments interacting with particles, not human consciousness creating reality through positive thoughts. Furthermore, the law of attraction collapses under its own logic: if your thoughts create your reality, then the Holocaust victims attracted their own genocide. Poverty-stricken people chose their poverty through negative thinking. Cancer patients caused their own disease. This is both demonstrably false and profoundly cruel. Jesus saying "ask and you shall receive" (John 16:24) is prayer to a personal God โ not alignment with an impersonal force. The critical difference: prayer submits to God's will ("not my will but thine" โ Matt 26:39), while manifestation asserts your own will as sovereign. James 4:13-15 explicitly addresses people who plan their own future without God โ calling it arrogance.
THE CALL: You don't have to carry the weight of creating your own reality. That burden was never designed for you. "Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." (Psalm 37:5). Give it to the One who holds all things.
Meditation and Emptying the Mind โ The Danger of the Open House
THE CLAIM: Eastern meditation โ clearing the mind, achieving silence, reaching an altered state of consciousness โ is spiritually healthy and compatible with any belief system. "Mindfulness" is now mainstream psychology. Emptying the mind of thoughts creates space for higher consciousness, peace, and spiritual connection.
THE SCRIPTURE: "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night." (Joshua 1:8). "Blessed is the man... his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night." (Psalm 1:1-2). "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report... think on these things." (Philippians 4:8). "When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there." (Matthew 12:43-45)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Mindfulness meditation is scientifically proven to reduce anxiety and improve mental health. I'm not contacting spirits โ I'm just quieting my mind. Christians pray in silence too."
THE RESPONSE: There is a profound difference between biblical meditation and Eastern meditation. Biblical meditation is FILLING the mind with God's Word โ active, engaged, deliberate focus on specific truth. Eastern meditation is EMPTYING the mind โ achieving a state of no-thought, no-self, receptive openness to whatever comes. Jesus's warning in Matthew 12:43-45 is exactly relevant: a mind that is emptied, swept clean, and left vacant is not a safe mind โ it is an open house. The clinical benefits of mindfulness (reduced stress, improved focus) can be achieved through many practices that don't involve opening spiritual doors. Biblical prayer, worship, scripture meditation, walking in nature โ these bring the same psychological benefits while filling the mind with truth rather than emptying it.
THE CALL: Your mind was not designed to be empty โ it was designed to be filled with the knowledge of God. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." (Isaiah 26:3). True peace is not the absence of thought โ it is the presence of God.
Spirit Guides and Channeling โ Testing What Speaks to You
THE CLAIM: Everyone has spirit guides โ benevolent beings of light who watch over us and offer wisdom. Some people communicate with them directly through meditation, channeling, or automatic writing. These guides are higher-dimensional beings who have our best interests at heart.
THE SCRIPTURE: "There shall not be found among you... a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD." (Deuteronomy 18:11-12). "And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits... should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?" (Isaiah 8:19). "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14). "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1)
THEIR OBJECTION: "My spirit guide has only ever given me positive, loving guidance. They encourage me to be better, to love more, to grow. If their fruit is good, how can they be evil?"
THE RESPONSE: 2 Corinthians 11:14 is the key verse: Satan presents himself as an angel of LIGHT โ not as something dark and frightening. The characteristic of demonic deception is that it feels warm, wise, and loving โ at first. Spirit guides consistently teach things that move people away from Christ, away from accountability to God's Word, away from sin-consciousness, and toward self-deification. They tell people they are divine, that all paths are valid, that there is no judgment, and that you should trust your feelings above any external authority. These are not neutral spiritual messages โ they are the same lies that have been told since Eden: "ye shall be as gods" and "ye shall not surely die" (Genesis 3:4-5). God does not forbid consultation with spirit guides because He is insecure โ He forbids it because what presents itself as a guide is not what it claims to be.
THE CALL: You were designed to be led by the Holy Spirit โ the Spirit of Truth (John 16:13) โ not by anonymous entities. "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." (Romans 8:14). The real Guide will never lead you away from the Son of God.
"You Are God" โ The Divine Spark Doctrine
THE CLAIM: We are all divine beings. You have a spark of God within you โ some teachers say you ARE God experiencing itself through human form. Consciousness IS God. The goal of spiritual practice is to remember and embody your divine nature. "I am that I am" is a statement we can all make.
THE SCRIPTURE: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!... For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God... I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell." (Isaiah 14:12-14). "Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God... yet thou art a man, and not God." (Ezekiel 28:2). "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods." (Genesis 3:4-5)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Jesus said 'the kingdom of God is within you' (Luke 17:21). John 10:34 โ Jesus quoted Psalm 82: 'I said ye are gods.' And 2 Peter 1:4 says we are 'partakers of the divine nature.' The Bible itself affirms our divine nature."
THE RESPONSE: Luke 17:21 says "the kingdom of God is among you" or "in your midst" โ Jesus was speaking to Pharisees, telling them the kingdom was right there in front of them in His person. Even if it means "within" โ the kingdom of God dwelling within believers is different from believers BEING God. Psalm 82:6 in full: "I said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. BUT YE SHALL DIE LIKE MEN." This is God's sarcastic rebuke of unjust judges โ not a promotion to divinity. 2 Peter 1:4 โ "partakers of the divine nature" โ means sharing in God's MORAL characteristics (holiness, love, righteousness) through the new birth, not becoming omniscient, omnipotent divine beings. The defining characteristic of Satan's fall was claiming divine status (Isa 14:14 โ "I will be like the Most High"). God rebuked the king of Tyre with the same claim (Eze 28:2 โ "thou hast said, I am a God"). The "you are God" teaching is not spiritual enlightenment โ it is the defining content of the original rebellion.
THE CALL: You are not God โ you are something more beautiful: a being made IN the image of God, designed for relationship with Him. A child of God outranks any self-proclaimed deity. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God." (John 1:12)
Reincarnation โ You Have One Life
THE CLAIM: The soul is immortal and returns through multiple lives until it achieves sufficient spiritual development to reunite with the divine source. Karma governs these cycles โ actions in past lives shape present circumstances. Reincarnation explains inequality, child suffering, and the sense of "old souls."
THE SCRIPTURE: "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." (Hebrews 9:27). "There was a certain rich man... And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments... And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence." (Luke 16:19,23,26). "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." (2 Corinthians 5:10)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Reincarnation is believed by billions of people across multiple ancient traditions โ Hinduism, Buddhism, many indigenous beliefs. Many people have verified past life memories. And it makes more sense morally โ it explains why babies die and why some people suffer unjustly."
THE RESPONSE: Hebrews 9:27 is absolute: "appointed unto men ONCE to die, but after this the judgment." Once โ not cycles. After death โ judgment, not another life. Luke 16:26 shows a "great gulf fixed" between the afterlife states that CANNOT be crossed โ no cycle of return. As for explaining suffering: reincarnation is actually morally brutal โ it means a child born into poverty or disability is paying for past-life karma. This is not compassion โ it is cosmic fatalism. It removes the moral imperative to help the suffering because they "deserve" their circumstances. The Gospel offers something reincarnation cannot: the suffering of THIS life is not payment for past sins โ it is an opportunity for God's glory to be revealed, and the resurrection will make all wrongs right permanently. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Revelation 21:4)
THE CALL: You have one life โ and it matters enormously. Not because you need to get it right for the next cycle, but because you are irreplaceable and eternally significant RIGHT NOW. "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." (2 Corinthians 6:2)
Tarot, Pendulums, Psychics, Ouija โ Divination Is Real and Dangerous
THE CLAIM: Tarot cards, pendulums, psychic readings, and ouija boards are tools for self-reflection and accessing intuition. They have no power in themselves โ it's just a system for tapping into your own subconscious or the universe's energy. Many people use them casually without harm.
THE SCRIPTURE: "There shall not be found among you any one... that useth divination... or an observer of times, or an enchanter... or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD thy God." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). "And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us... And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour." (Acts 16:16-18). "Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit." (1 Chronicles 10:13)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Tarot is just symbolic imagery that prompts reflection. Psychics are often just intuitive people who read body language. These are neutral tools โ the harm only comes from taking them too seriously."
THE RESPONSE: Acts 16:16-18 establishes that the "spirit of divination" is a real spiritual entity that Paul cast OUT in the name of Jesus. The girl was able to tell accurate fortunes โ the information was real โ but it came from a demonic source. This is not neutral self-reflection. 1 Chronicles 10:13 records that Saul DIED specifically for consulting a familiar spirit. The death of a king for one spiritual consultation should communicate the seriousness of this to us. The argument "it's just symbolic" breaks down immediately when the symbols consistently produce accurate information โ information that has to come from somewhere. If the accuracy is real, the source is real. And God is unambiguous about what that source is. Furthermore, many people who begin "casually" with tarot or ouija report escalating experiences โ oppression, fear, voices, and encounters that are anything but neutral.
THE CALL: God did not forbid divination arbitrarily โ He forbids it because He loves you and knows what opens doors that are hard to close. "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." (Jeremiah 29:11). You don't need a tarot card to access God's plan for your life โ you need a relationship with Him.
Yoga and Its Spiritual Roots โ Union With What?
THE CLAIM: Yoga is just stretching and exercise. The spiritual origins in Hinduism are irrelevant to modern practice โ people do yoga for flexibility, stress relief, and physical health. "Christian yoga" exists, and many churches offer yoga classes. Separating the physical practice from the spiritual is entirely possible.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (1 Corinthians 10:21). "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31). "Abstain from all appearance of evil." (1 Thessalonians 5:22)
THEIR OBJECTION: "I'm just doing the physical postures โ I'm not chanting mantras or worshipping Hindu gods. The exercise is neutral. Paul said 'physical training is of some value' (1 Tim 4:8). My body is a temple โ I'm taking care of it."
THE RESPONSE: The word "yoga" literally means "union" โ specifically union with Brahman (the Hindu supreme consciousness). The asanas (postures) are not secular exercises that were later adopted by Hinduism โ they were developed AS worship postures for specific Hindu deities. Surya Namaskar (the "sun salutation" sequence) is a ritual prayer sequence to Surya, the Hindu sun god, performed 12 times for 12 aspects of the sun deity. The postures themselves have intentional spiritual meaning that cannot be fully separated from their purpose. This does not mean stretching is sinful โ it means adopting a system specifically designed for Hindu deity worship as a Christian spiritual practice creates confusion about what we are giving our bodies to. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says your body belongs to the Holy Spirit โ give it to practices designed to honor God, not those designed to honor other deities.
THE CALL: Exercise is good and godly โ "physical training is of some value" (1 Tim 4:8). But there are countless ways to stretch, strengthen, and care for your body that don't involve postures designed for Hindu worship. Honor God with your whole body. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." (Romans 12:1)
Jesus Was Just an Enlightened Spiritual Teacher or Ascended Master
THE CLAIM: Jesus was one of many great spiritual masters โ alongside Buddha, Krishna, Lao Tzu, and others. He achieved a high level of spiritual consciousness and taught universal love and oneness. His actual message was about awakening to your own divine nature โ the church distorted this into exclusive religion. Some New Age teachers say Jesus spent the "hidden years" (ages 12-30) studying in India or Egypt.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6). "I and my Father are one." (John 10:30). "Before Abraham was, I AM." (John 8:58). "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father." (John 14:9). "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." (Colossians 2:9)
THEIR OBJECTION: "The historical Jesus was a revolutionary wisdom teacher. The Christ of Christianity was a theological construction by the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The real Jesus taught love and inner transformation โ not exclusive salvation claims."
THE RESPONSE: The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD did NOT create the doctrine of Christ's divinity โ it CONFIRMED what the church had always believed by settling a dispute with Arius who DENIED it. The New Testament documents โ written by eyewitnesses and their immediate companions within decades of the crucifixion โ are filled with explicit divine claims BY Jesus Himself. C.S. Lewis's trilemma is definitive: a man who said the things Jesus said ("I AM," "I and the Father are one," accepting worship, claiming to forgive sins) is either a LIAR (deliberately deceiving), a LUNATIC (genuinely deluded), or LORD (telling the truth). The one option NOT available is "a great moral teacher" โ because a great moral teacher does not claim to be God while knowing he is not. The "hidden years in India" claim has zero historical evidence โ it appears first in a 19th century Russian journalist's fraudulent account (Nicolas Notovitch, 1894, which he later admitted fabricating).
THE CALL: Jesus did not leave room for the "wise teacher" interpretation. He said He IS the way โ not that He shows a way. He said He IS the truth โ not that He teaches truth. Liar, Lunatic, or Lord. The evidence of the resurrection makes the third option the only coherent one.
The Bible Is Just One of Many Sacred Texts
THE CLAIM: The Bible is one sacred text among many โ the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching, the Book of Mormon, A Course in Miracles, and countless others all contain spiritual wisdom. Limiting yourself to one book is spiritually narrow. Truth can be found in all traditions.
THE SCRIPTURE: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, THROUGHLY furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17). "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." (2 Peter 1:21). "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." (Isaiah 40:8)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Every culture has its own sacred scriptures โ that universality suggests something genuine in all of them. And the Bible has been translated and copied by human hands โ it can't be inerrant. All sacred texts are human attempts to describe the divine."
THE RESPONSE: The Bible is in a categorically different class from all other sacred texts โ not by assertion but by evidence. It was written by 40 authors over 1,500 years across three continents and three languages โ yet contains one unified narrative of redemption. It contains 300+ specific, verifiable prophecies about the Messiah fulfilled in one person โ the mathematical probability of coincidental fulfillment is beyond calculation. It has been confirmed archaeologically and historically to a degree no other ancient document has been โ the Dead Sea Scrolls (1947) confirmed that the Old Testament text we have today is virtually identical to copies made 1,000 years earlier. More people have died to preserve and distribute the Bible than any other book in history. "A Course in Miracles" was channeled from a "spiritual entity" through Helen Schucman in the 1970s โ the kind of source explicitly forbidden in Deuteronomy 18:10-12. Sacred texts are not equal โ they make mutually exclusive claims and can be evaluated.
THE CALL: You owe it to yourself to actually investigate the Bible โ not casually assume it is equivalent to other texts. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105). Read it honestly. It is unlike anything else ever written.
Near-Death Experiences โ Not All Light Is From God
THE CLAIM: Near-death experiences (NDEs) where people describe going toward a loving light, meeting deceased relatives, feeling unconditional acceptance for everyone regardless of beliefs, and returning with a sense of universal love โ prove that God accepts everyone, there is no judgment, and all religions lead to the same destination. The NDE community is one of the strongest arguments for New Age universalism.
THE SCRIPTURE: "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14). "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1). "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." (Hebrews 9:27). "For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Millions of people from every culture and religion have had NDEs โ and the core experience is remarkably consistent: love, light, acceptance. This cross-cultural consistency proves it's a real phenomenon pointing to a universal spiritual truth that transcends religious boundaries."
THE RESPONSE: NDEs are a real phenomenon โ the question is interpretation. 2 Corinthians 11:14 establishes that a being of light is not automatically God โ Satan presents himself as exactly that. The consistent message of "universalism" in NDE accounts is not neutral โ it consistently teaches things that contradict Scripture: no judgment for sin, all beliefs accepted, death is nothing to fear. This is precisely the content of demonic deception. Furthermore, a significant minority of NDE accounts are terrifying โ describing hellish environments โ and these are systematically underreported because they don't fit the preferred narrative. Hebrews 9:27 is clear: after death is judgment, not a universal welcome. And the Bible's account of the afterlife (Luke 16:19-31) shows a conscious, meaningful distinction between destinations โ not universal acceptance. A supernatural experience that consistently leads people away from Christ and toward universalism is not pointing to the God of the Bible.
THE CALL: The real God IS love (1 John 4:8) โ and His love is why He provided a way of salvation through the cross. His love doesn't bypass judgment โ it PAID for it. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
"Spiritual But Not Religious" โ Spirituality Without Accountability
THE CLAIM: "I'm spiritual but not religious" โ connecting with God or the divine in a personal, individual way, without organized religion, doctrines, or rules. Spirituality is about inner experience, love, and growth โ not institutions, creeds, or judgment. This is the fastest-growing spiritual identity in the Western world.
THE SCRIPTURE: "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." (Proverbs 14:12). "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25). "Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding." (Proverbs 23:23)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Organized religion has caused so much harm โ wars, abuse, hypocrisy, control. I can have a genuine relationship with God without submitting to human institutions. My personal spirituality is more authentic than going to church out of obligation."
THE RESPONSE: The critique of religious institutions is often legitimate โ human organizations corrupt spiritual truth. But "spiritual but not religious" has a critical vulnerability: without an objective standard (Scripture), without community accountability, and without anything outside your own feelings and intuition, your spirituality will inevitably conform to what you already want to believe. Jeremiah 17:9 warns that the heart is DECEITFUL โ we cannot trust our own spiritual instincts as the final authority. This is not an insult โ it is a description of the human condition after the fall. "SBNR" spirituality consistently ends up affirming whatever the person already believes, avoiding whatever makes them uncomfortable, and never confronting sin or calling for repentance. It is spiritual comfort food โ nourishing to feel, empty of substance. Jesus said the truth would make you FREE (John 8:32) โ but freedom from truth is not freedom, it is drift.
THE CALL: You don't need organized religion โ you need a real relationship with the living God who speaks through His Word. That is not the same as an institution. Come to the Word itself. Come to the Person of Yeshua. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
The Final Call to Every Spiritual Seeker
THE CLAIM: The New Age movement grows because it speaks to genuine needs: meaning, connection, transcendence, healing from religious trauma, and the hunger for something real beyond the material world. These are legitimate needs โ the question is whether the New Age actually answers them.
THE SCRIPTURE: "He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end." (Ecclesiastes 3:11). "As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?" (Psalm 42:1-2). "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?" (Isaiah 55:1-2)
THEIR OBJECTION: "The New Age offers what organized religion failed to give me: genuine spiritual experience, community, acceptance, tools for transformation, and connection to something greater. What does Christianity offer that the New Age doesn't โ but better?"
THE RESPONSE: Augustine wrote 1,600 years ago: "Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless, until it repose in Thee." The spiritual hunger driving the New Age search is REAL โ and it was placed there by God to lead you TO God. The New Age offers: experiences without truth, community without accountability, transformation without repentance, connection without relationship. Christianity โ the real thing, not the institutional corruption โ offers: a personal God who KNOWS your name (John 10:3), forgiveness for everything you've ever done (1 John 1:9), a community that bears one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2), a purpose that outlasts your life (Matthew 28:19-20), and an eternal future that makes every present suffering bearable (Romans 8:18). The New Age sells what was stolen from Eden and offers it back as merchandise. Jesus offers it free: "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink." (John 7:37)
THE CALL: You have been searching. That search is holy โ it is the echo of eternity God placed in your heart. The answer to everything you have been looking for has a name: Yeshua. He is not a doctrine. He is not a religion. He is a person โ alive, present, and closer than you have ever imagined. "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20)
Reiki and Energy Healing
THE CLAIM: Reiki practitioners channel "universal life force energy" (ki/chi/prana) through their hands to heal. Many hospitals now offer Reiki. It's scientifically studied and spiritually neutral โ just energy work.
THE SCRIPTURE: "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)
"But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries." (Acts 8:9-11)
"And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." (Isaiah 8:19-20)
The power in Reiki is not neutral โ it is accessed through spiritual attunements, symbols, and practices that attribute healing to a "universal force," not to the God of Scripture. Reiki Masters undergo initiations where they receive spiritual "attunements" from other practitioners โ a transmission of spiritual power outside of God's ordained channels.
THEIR OBJECTION: "Studies show Reiki reduces stress and pain โ if it works, how can it be harmful? It's used in hospitals. It's evidence-based."
THE RESPONSE: The effectiveness of a spiritual practice doesn't validate its source. Simon the sorcerer in Acts 8 genuinely amazed people โ the power was real. Pharaoh's magicians in Exodus 7-8 genuinely replicated some of Moses's miracles โ they turned staffs into serpents and water into blood. Satan has genuine power. The question is not "does it work" but "what is the source." A counterfeit miracle is still a miracle โ just from the wrong king. Hospital adoption is not theological validation. Hospitals also offer chaplains of every religion โ institutional inclusion does not equal spiritual truth.
THE CALL: The God who heals through prayer is available directly โ no attunements, no symbols, no intermediary energy. "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up." (James 5:14-15). Go to the Source directly.
Wicca and Modern Witchcraft
THE CLAIM: Wicca is a modern pagan religion celebrating nature, the divine feminine, and seasonal cycles. The Wiccan Rede says "an it harm none, do what ye will." It's not satanic โ it's nature spirituality. Wiccans don't even believe in Satan. It's about honoring the earth and the goddess.
THE SCRIPTURE: "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12) โ the Hebrew word kashaph, translated "witch," is explicitly in the forbidden list.
"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." (Exodus 22:18)
"And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers." (Micah 5:12)
"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies." (Galatians 5:19-20)
"But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils." (1 Corinthians 10:20)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Wicca has nothing to do with Satan โ Wiccans don't even believe in Satan. And the Bible's 'witch' referred to a specific ancient practice, not modern nature religion. Wicca is peaceful, nature-based, and harms no one."
THE RESPONSE: Whether or not Wiccans believe in Satan is irrelevant to whether the spiritual entities they interact with are demonic. A fish doesn't need to believe in water to swim in it. Paul's statement in 1 Corinthians 10:20 is definitive โ the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God. The spiritual entities present in pagan nature worship are not rendered neutral because they are unintentionally invoked. The Wiccan Rede โ "an it harm none, do what ye will" โ is itself a theological statement that directly contradicts Scripture's teaching that human will is fallen and needs redemption, not liberation. "Do what ye will" is the oldest lie in the garden: "ye shall be as gods" (Genesis 3:5).
THE CALL: The genuine awe at creation that Wicca channels is real โ God placed it there. "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." (Psalm 19:1). The impulse to worship nature is the right impulse aimed at the wrong object. "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever." (Romans 1:25). Worship the Creator, not the creation.
The Enneagram โ Now Inside the Church
THE CLAIM: The Enneagram is a personality typing system with nine types. Many Christians use it as a spiritual growth tool, self-awareness instrument, and even pastoral counseling framework. It's been embraced by Christian publishers, retreat centers, and seminaries. It helps you understand your "core sin" and path to spiritual health.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." (Colossians 2:8)
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) โ note: THOROUGHLY furnished. Scripture claims sufficiency for spiritual formation.
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)
THEIR OBJECTION: "The Enneagram is just a personality tool โ like Myers-Briggs. It helps people understand themselves and grow. Many serious, doctrinally sound Christians have found it spiritually helpful. You can eat the meat and spit out the bones."
THE RESPONSE: The Enneagram's origins trace through George Gurdjieff (an occultist who taught "Fourth Way" mysticism), Oscar Ichazo (who claimed the system was revealed to him by a spiritual entity he called Metatron โ a "green angel"), and Claudio Naranjo (who spread it through New Age circles in Esalen, California). Its modern "Christian" version was adapted primarily by Catholic contemplatives like Richard Rohr โ himself a universalist who denies substitutionary atonement. Unlike Myers-Briggs (which is purely psychological and makes no spiritual claims), the Enneagram carries an explicit spiritual framework about the soul's "passions" and "virtues" that is derived from non-Christian esoteric sources. You cannot "eat the meat and spit out the bones" when the bones ARE the structure. The spiritual framework IS the Enneagram โ remove it and you have a less rigorous personality test.
THE CALL: Scripture is the tool God gave for self-knowledge โ and it claims to be sufficient. "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12). You don't need an occult-rooted personality system to know yourself. You need the Word that knows you better than you know yourself.
Psychedelics as Spiritual Tools / Plant Medicine
THE CLAIM: Ayahuasca, psilocybin mushrooms, DMT, and other "plant medicines" have been used for thousands of years in indigenous spiritual ceremonies. They produce genuine mystical experiences โ encounters with entities, dissolution of ego, feelings of divine love โ that many people find more spiritually real than anything they've experienced in church. Modern research at Johns Hopkins and NYU is validating their therapeutic and spiritual potential.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies." (Galatians 5:19-20) โ the Greek word translated "witchcraft" here is pharmakeia โ the use of drugs/substances in connection with spiritual practice.
"Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts." (Revelation 9:21) โ sorceries is again pharmakeia.
"For by thy sorceries were all nations deceived." (Revelation 18:23) โ pharmakeia again. All nations deceived through substance-aided spiritual deception.
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14)
THEIR OBJECTION: "The Greek word pharmakeia referred to poisoning and drug use in a pagan ritual context โ modern therapeutic use is completely different. And the experiences people have on psychedelics are often profoundly healing and Christ-centered. Some people meet Jesus on ayahuasca."
THE RESPONSE: Pharmakeia in Galatians 5:20 and Revelation is precisely about the use of substances to access spiritual states โ which is exactly what ayahuasca ceremonies and psilocybin retreats do. The context is not accidental. The entities people encounter in psychedelic experiences are consistent with descriptions of demonic beings in Scripture โ they often present as loving, wise, and spiritually authoritative. The "Jesus" encountered on ayahuasca does not call people to repentance, does not affirm Scripture, and does not point to the cross โ because it is not Jesus. "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Cor 11:14). The fact that an experience feels divine does not make it divine. Pharaoh's magicians produced real signs โ from the wrong source.
THE CALL: The genuine mystical experience you are seeking โ the dissolution of self-centeredness, the encounter with overwhelming love, the sense of being fully known โ is available through genuine encounter with the living God. No substance required. "Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:18). The Spirit offers everything psychedelics promise โ without the deception.
Synchronicities and "Signs from the Universe"
THE CLAIM: Meaningful coincidences โ seeing 11:11 on the clock, finding a feather after thinking of a deceased loved one, a song playing at the perfect moment, repeating number patterns โ are signs from the universe, from deceased loved ones, or from spirit guides. These synchronicities guide us on our spiritual path and confirm we are "aligned."
THE SCRIPTURE: "The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil." (Proverbs 16:4) โ God is sovereign over all events, not "the universe."
"Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows." (Matthew 10:29-31) โ God's providence is real and personal, but He is not anonymous.
"Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God." (Leviticus 19:31)
"There shall not be found among you... a consulter with familiar spirits." (Deuteronomy 18:11) โ the practice of interpreting signs from deceased loved ones falls under consulting familiar spirits.
THEIR OBJECTION: "These experiences are too specific and personal to be random. My deceased mother sends me butterflies โ the timing is too perfect to be coincidence. Surely God can use signs? Even the Bible has signs and wonders."
THE RESPONSE: God DOES use signs โ but He channels them through His Word, through prophecy He verifies through multiple witnesses, through direct communication with His people โ not through numerology, feathers, and butterflies that require subjective interpretation and keep people dependent on sign-reading rather than Scripture-reading. The "deceased loved one" sending butterflies draws people into ongoing communication with the dead โ which Deuteronomy 18:11 explicitly forbids. The entity presenting as your deceased mother may know things about her precisely because familiar spirits study families โ the word "familiar" in the KJV of Deuteronomy 18:11 comes from the Latin familiaris, meaning "of the family." These spirits are familiar WITH your family. That is their specialty and their deception.
THE CALL: You don't need signs and synchronicities to navigate life โ you have something infinitely more reliable. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105). The Word of God guides more reliably than butterflies, more clearly than repeating numbers, and more honestly than any entity pretending to be someone you loved.
Ancestor Veneration and Communicating with the Dead
THE CLAIM: Many cultures maintain connection with deceased ancestors through ritual, prayer, offerings, and altars. The dead watch over us, care for us, and can be consulted for wisdom and guidance. This is universal human practice across most of world history โ from Dรญa de los Muertos to Chinese ancestor worship to African traditional religions. It's about honoring family bonds that transcend death.
THE SCRIPTURE: "And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." (Isaiah 8:19-20)
"And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." (Luke 16:30-31)
"And between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence." (Luke 16:26)
"So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it." (1 Chronicles 10:13)
THEIR OBJECTION: "Ancestor veneration is not the same as necromancy โ it's honoring those who came before us, maintaining familial bonds beyond death. Many cultures integrate this with their Christian faith naturally. It's about respect, not sorcery."
THE RESPONSE: The Bible's prohibition is precisely about seeking communication with the dead in any form โ whether through a medium, through ritual, through offerings left at altars, or through prayers directed at the deceased. Saul's consultation with Samuel through the medium at Endor (1 Samuel 28) resulted in his death the next day โ and 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 explicitly states he died BECAUSE of this consultation. Luke 16:26 shows a "great gulf fixed" between the living and the dead โ the dead in the story cannot cross it. The dead are not accessible to the living through ritual. What responds to ancestor veneration is not the ancestor โ it is a familiar spirit. These entities specialize in impersonating the deceased because they have observed families for generations. The comfort they offer is real โ but it is bait.
THE CALL: You can honor the memory of those who have died without communicating with them. Cherish their legacy. Live the values they taught you. But pray to the God who holds them โ and who holds you. "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living." (Matthew 22:32). Your loved ones are in His hands. Trust the One who holds them.
"Christian" Yoga, Mindfulness, and Contemplative Prayer
THE CLAIM: Christians can practice yoga, mindfulness meditation, and contemplative prayer (centering prayer) as neutral or even spiritually enriching tools. These practices help quiet the mind to hear God's voice. Richard Foster, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, and many popular Christian teachers endorse contemplative prayer. "Holy yoga" and "Christian mindfulness" are offered in churches nationwide.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15) โ biblical meditation is active study, not passive emptying.
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." (Romans 12:2) โ transformation comes through RENEWING (filling) the mind, not emptying it.
"When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there." (Matthew 12:43-45) โ an emptied house is not a safe house.
"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night." (Joshua 1:8) โ God's definition of meditation is to fill the mind with His Word.
THEIR OBJECTION: "Centering prayer is simply Christian meditation โ silencing the noise to hear God's still small voice. 1 Kings 19:12 shows God speaks in a still small voice. This is ancient Christian practice from the Desert Fathers. Even the word 'yoga' just means 'union' โ union with God is what we all want."
THE RESPONSE: The Desert Fathers' practices have been selectively adapted by the New Age movement and re-entered the church through figures like Thomas Merton โ who explicitly syncretized Christianity with Zen Buddhism and Sufism, writing: "I see no contradiction between Buddhism and Christianity... I intend to become as good a Buddhist as I can." Centering prayer's method โ repeating a "sacred word" to dismiss all thoughts and enter a state of mental emptiness โ is structurally identical to Transcendental Meditation's mantra technique. 1 Kings 19:12 shows God speaking in a still small voice to Elijah โ but Elijah was not in an emptied trance state. He was actively listening, standing at the mouth of a cave, and was given a specific verbal message with concrete instructions (1 Kings 19:15-18). As for yoga โ the word means "yoke" (union with Brahman in Hindu theology). The physical postures are not separable from the spiritual system; they were designed as worship positions for Hindu deities. Renaming them doesn't change their origin or spiritual function.
THE CALL: God speaks through His Word โ which requires active engagement of the mind, not its emptying. "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein." (Joshua 1:8). Biblical meditation is chewing on Scripture โ turning it over, speaking it aloud, applying it to life. Fill your mind with the Word. Don't empty it for something else to fill.
The New Age Jesus โ "A Course in Miracles" and the Gnostic Christ
THE CLAIM: "A Course in Miracles" (ACIM), channeled by Helen Schucman from 1965-1972, presents a "Jesus" who teaches: "The Atonement is the final lesson he need learn, for it teaches him that, never having sinned, he has no need of salvation." This Jesus denies sin, denies the need for atonement, denies the reality of the physical world, and teaches that separation from God is an illusion. Many spiritual seekers โ including millions who have left traditional churches โ find this Jesus "more loving" and "more evolved" than the biblical Jesus.
THE SCRIPTURE: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:8-9) โ Paul repeats the warning twice for emphasis.
"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." (2 John 1:7)
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1)
"For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:10)
"For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45)
THEIR OBJECTION: "A Course in Miracles teaches unconditional love and forgiveness โ surely these align with Jesus's real message? The traditional Jesus who demands blood atonement for sin seems harsh and primitive by comparison. ACIM's Jesus is simply the evolved version."
THE RESPONSE: Helen Schucman claimed the voice dictating the Course identified itself as Jesus. This means either Jesus contradicted everything He said in the Gospels โ that He came to die for sins (Mark 10:45), that God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son (John 3:16), that His blood was shed for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:28), that without Him people would die in their sins (John 8:24) โ or the voice was not Jesus. There is no third option. Paul's warning in Galatians 1:8-9 is surgically precise: even if it comes from an "angel from heaven," if it preaches another gospel, it is accursed. A Jesus who says you have never sinned and need no salvation is not the biblical Jesus. He is a channeled entity delivering a more comfortable message โ which is exactly what 2 Timothy 4:3 predicted: "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears."
THE CALL: The real Jesus is not more comfortable โ He is more honest. And His honesty is the deepest form of love. He tells you the truth about sin AND the truth about love โ simultaneously. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16). A Jesus who tells you sin doesn't exist cannot save you from it. The Jesus who died on the cross took your sin seriously enough to bleed for it. That is love. Both truths together โ sin and love โ are the Gospel.
The Law of Attraction and "The Secret" โ A Deeper Analysis
THE CLAIM: "The Secret" (2006) by Rhonda Byrne teaches that thoughts are magnetic frequencies โ positive thoughts attract positive outcomes, negative thoughts attract negative outcomes. This is presented as a universal "law" as reliable as gravity, allegedly used by history's greatest achievers. "Ask, believe, receive." You are the creator of your reality. The universe is a catalog โ place your order with your thoughts.
THE SCRIPTURE: "Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.'" (James 4:13-15) โ your plans are subject to God's will, not your own thought-frequencies.
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9) โ the heart that LOA tells you to trust is the same heart Scripture calls desperately wicked.
"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." (Psalm 37:4) โ often misquoted as LOA Scripture.
"For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." (Proverbs 23:7) โ often misquoted as LOA Scripture.
THEIR OBJECTION: "Psalm 37:4 literally says God will give you the desires of your heart. Philippians 4:8 says think on good things. Proverbs 23:7 says as a man thinks, so is he. Even the Bible teaches that positive thinking shapes outcomes."
THE RESPONSE: Psalm 37:4 says DELIGHT in the LORD โ and THEN He gives you the desires of your heart. The sequence matters: when you delight in God, your desires are shaped BY God. The verse is about wanting what God wants for you, not commanding the universe to deliver your wish list. Philippians 4:8 tells us to think on good things for our OWN SPIRITUAL HEALTH and sanctification โ not to magnetize material outcomes. Proverbs 23:7 in context is about a stingy host โ "as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" means his outward generosity masks inward calculation. It is a warning about hypocrisy, not a manifesting technique.
The critical MORAL problem with "The Secret" and LOA: if your thoughts create your reality, then cancer patients caused their own cancer. Holocaust victims attracted their genocide. Children born into poverty and abuse chose it through negative thinking in utero โ or in a past life. This is not a minor theological quibble. It is a profoundly cruel worldview that systematically blames victims for their suffering while flattering the privileged into believing they earned their comfort through superior thinking.
THE CALL: Your thoughts do not create reality โ but they DO matter, because you are made in the image of a God who thinks. "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" โ your thoughts reveal who you ARE, not what you can manufacture. Think truth. Think the Word. Let God โ not your own desires โ shape your life. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6).
The Final Deeper Call โ What the New Age Search Is Really For
THE CLAIM: The New Age offers a complete alternative spiritual framework โ experiential, personalized, non-judgmental, compatible with modern science (quantum physics language), and free from the guilt and shame of traditional religion. For many people who have been hurt by church, manipulated by religious leaders, or suffocated by dead tradition, the New Age is a genuine spiritual home. It offers community, healing, purpose, and transcendence โ everything religion promised but failed to deliver.
THE SCRIPTURE: "He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God hath made from the beginning to the end." (Ecclesiastes 3:11) โ God placed eternity in the human heart. The spiritual hunger is real and God-given.
"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness." (Isaiah 55:1-2)
"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20)
"These people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me." (Matthew 15:8)
"I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies... But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream." (Amos 5:21,24)
THEIR OBJECTION: "The New Age has healed my trauma, given me community, and connected me to something real. Traditional Christianity only gave me shame, judgment, and dead rules. Why would I trade a living spiritual practice for dead religion?"
THE RESPONSE: The critique of dead religion is valid โ and God agrees with it. "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me" (Matthew 15:8). The God of the Bible hates empty religion as much as you do โ He said so through the prophets repeatedly and forcefully (Amos 5:21-24, Isaiah 1:11-17, Jeremiah 7:4-11). If your experience of Christianity was shame without grace, rules without relationship, judgment without love โ that was a failure of the humans who represented God, not a failure of God Himself.
But the answer to dead religion is not New Age spirituality โ it is the living God who said "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock." The New Age offers spirituality without the cross โ which means spirituality without the genuine removal of guilt, without real forgiveness that costs something, without a God who actually knows your name and died for you specifically and personally. Every crystal, every ceremony, every retreat, every book costs you something โ money, time, spiritual energy โ and leaves you searching for the next thing. Isaiah 55:2 asks the question that sums up the entire New Age economy: "Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?"
You have been paying โ in courses, in retreats, in books, in ceremonies, in subscriptions, in emotional energy โ for something that keeps you searching. The fact that you are STILL searching is the proof that it has not satisfied.
THE CALL: Your search is sacred. The hunger that drives you into spirituality is God-given โ He "set eternity in your heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). But you have been eating food that does not satisfy. There is bread that actually fills. There is water that actually quenches. "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." (John 6:35). Not "shall hunger less." Not "shall thirst more gently." SHALL NEVER HUNGER. SHALL NEVER THIRST. Come and eat.
Conclusion
New Age spirituality is ancient paganism repackaged for modern consumption. You are not God. You cannot manifest your own reality. Sin is real, judgment is coming, and no amount of positive thinking can atone for it. Jesus is not one path among many โ He is the only way, the only truth, and the only life. Reject the lies of the New Age and embrace the exclusive, uncompromising gospel of Jesus Christ.
